Public Library Master Plan

Accessible & Inclusive Hub

DRAW Collective is working with Mt. Lebanon Public Library on a master plan to evaluate the existing facility. The master plan explores how upgrades can modernize the interiors, provide wayfinding, and increase access to their outdoor garden.

The Library identified problem areas such as how the space will evolve and how a redesign can maximize the space to be flexible and welcoming. The atmosphere is also a critical element to the Library. A colorful and bright design promotes a safe and welcoming space for children and adults in the renovated facility. The library also wanted to increase accessibility for the community to its shelves, while updating its interior space to create a more flexible space that can be continuously transformed as their collection and community wants to evolve.

An emphasis on community is crucial to the Library. Thus, DRAW included various design elements to ensure this need was met. A play area provides a dedicated space for children and adults to connect and acts as a story space for the Library’s weekly story time events. A biophilic design was utilized in the children’s library to reflect the communities dense tree population and create a playful, welcome space for children.

Currently, DRAW is working with the library to determine the next steps of the master plan as part of a larger capital campaign to renovate the building.
