The grand opening of Waynesburg University’s new Entrepreneurial Hub for Innovative Ventures and Endeavors (eHIVE) marked a significant milestone for the institution. Driven by the vision of fostering entrepreneurship and innovation across campus, the eHIVE represents a culmination of efforts to instill an entrepreneurial mindset among students from various disciplines.
Led by Dr. Mindy Walls, the W. Robert Stover chair for entrepreneurial leadership and chair of the business department, the university has consolidated its entrepreneurial activities into this new space. The goal is to provide every student with the opportunity to develop both the mindset and skillset necessary to identify and solve real-world problems, aligning with the university’s mission.
President Douglas Lee’s commitment to creating a culture of entrepreneurship at Waynesburg University laid the foundation for the establishment of the Entrepreneurial Leadership Program in 2018. The eHIVE is a testament to this vision, symbolizing the university’s dedication to equipping students with essential entrepreneurial skills for their future endeavors.
The new eHIVE, funded by generous donors, offers state-of-the-art facilities including a makerspace, woodshop, flex space for meetings, and a classroom. Its open-door policy welcomes students from all majors to utilize equipment like 3D printers, laser engravers, CNC routers, and more under proper supervision. This interdisciplinary approach encourages collaboration across departments and fosters creativity and innovation.
Integration with The Nest, the on-campus apparel store, further enhances the eHIVE’s impact. Products created in the maker space are sold at The Nest, providing students with practical experience in product development and sales. This seamless connection between education and real-world application exemplifies the university’s commitment to holistic entrepreneurship education.
Recognition from esteemed organizations such as the Rising Star Award for Excellence in Curriculum Innovation in Entrepreneurship and the “Outstanding Emerging Entrepreneurship Center” accolade from the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers reaffirms the eHIVE’s success and influence.
Ultimately, the eHIVE represents more than just a physical space; it embodies Waynesburg University’s dedication to empowering students, driving innovation, and making a positive impact on the community. Through the support of donors and the collective efforts of faculty, staff, and students, the eHIVE is poised to shape the future of entrepreneurship education and inspire generations to come
