Steel Valley school board approves plans for new elementary

The Steel Valley School Board has approved plans to construct a new elementary school in Munhall, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The $56 million project will consolidate K-5 students who are currently attending two separate schools and will be connected to the existing middle/high school campus in Munhall.

The new elementary school, designed to accommodate 700 students, is set to open for the 2026-27 school year. Board President James Bulger stated that the development will not only allow students to learn together throughout their entire school journey but will also improve safety and security.

The new school will be built on the site of the former Franklin Primary School building, which is currently used by district administration. This building is scheduled to be demolished this summer.

The district noted that the current elementary facilities are over 90 years old. Evaluations of Barrett Elementary in Homestead, built in 1934, and Park Elementary in Munhall, constructed in the early 1900s, revealed “significant barriers” to renovating or expanding these buildings, leading the district to opt for a new construction.

DRAW Collective will serve as the architect for the project, with Rycon Construction as the builder.
