As South Allegheny Elementary welcomed several hundred visitors to explore the newly unveiled Innovation Center on a Tuesday evening, the occasion was one filled with gratitude. Students reveled in the new space, their excitement evident as they dashed around. Meanwhile, parents engaged in lively conversations, and school staff, including district members, interacted with attendees, marveling at the rich resources available to nurture their students.
Reflecting on the Center’s journey, Principal Michael Calvert shared, “I arrived at SA in January of 2021 when we were in the planning stages, so it’s been over two years from the initial concept to seeing our students here. Construction began on April 1 of the previous school year, continuing through summer and into fall, and now, we’re thrilled that it’s finally complete.”
Calvert highlighted the Center’s diverse and innovative spaces catering to a range of activities, from STEAM pursuits, arts, computer programming, and coding to video and broadcast production. The Center’s vibrant and playful décor creates an inviting atmosphere, providing multiple workspaces such as a music studio equipped with instruments and production tools, a video-production studio boasting a green screen and editing facilities, an art room teeming with supplies and ample project space, and a dedicated STEAM area tailored to meet the demands of today’s evolving job market.
“Excitement abounds,” Calvert continued. “These spaces are invaluable for our kids, fostering their innate creativity and allowing them to truly express themselves. Moreover, it instills a deep sense of pride in our students for their school. Our aim is to have students eager to step into the building and engage, and that’s precisely what we’ve cultivated here with our wonderful students and dedicated staff.”
Highlighting the Center’s adaptability, Calvert emphasized its capacity to serve various functions across the school and its provision of multiple curricula, with ongoing plans for expanded usage and subjects.
“Since its recent opening, we’ve already integrated daily activities like library science, computer coding, and art,” Calvert mentioned enthusiastically. “Our students are actively engaged in producing a daily student-led news show, an impressive feat achieved entirely by our students.”
He also noted the proactive initiative of teachers relocating their classes to this innovative space, citing a recent instance where a math class opted for a different environment. They utilized the adaptable seating and space to facilitate collaborative math programs.
In expressing gratitude, Calvert extended appreciation to the contractors, workers, and staff, acknowledging their relentless dedication. He firmly believes that the entire district will reap the benefits of this exceptional development. “The contractors and workers devoted themselves to this project, working tirelessly even through the final phases. Teachers, who temporarily adjusted due to the renovations, displayed remarkable patience and flexibility. The overwhelming support and enthusiasm from our staff and students have truly made this an extraordinary endeavor.”
