New Neonatal ICU, WVU Medicine

WVU Medicine saw a critical need in their community for an Intensive Care Unit for newborn infants with serious medical issues. The project created a new Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) through the renovation of space close to their Labor, Delivery and Post-Partum Unit.

The NICU is well organized for the efficient delivery of care that allows parents to remain close to their newborn and to be included in the caring process.

The design places an emphasis on providing significant positive imaging throughout the new unit for the parent of the newborn infant and for the professional staff who are administering the critical care. The Unit features bright colors and patterns on the floors, walls and ceilings. A display of flowers, plants and butterflies are cut into floor patterns and applied to walls and sidelights. A colorful cloud hangs over the central nurse station.
