The VEBH design for the Blackhawk School District’s Highland Middle School continues to receive recognition as an outstanding educational facility, this time as a result of the overwhelming support of Highland’s students and the Blackhawk community.
Highland Middle School is the recipient of the AIA Pittsburgh’s 2014 People’s Choice Award, presented during the organization’s annual Design Pittsburgh event which celebrates architecture and design in the Pittsburgh area. The Highland Middle School renovation and expansion project was designed by VEBH to create a 21st Century learning environment that supports the amazing growth and learning that occurs during a student’s middle school years.
The school features educational-based themes of “Explorers,” “Inventors,” and “Pioneers,” developed with the school’s teaching staff to support each grade level’s curriculum. The themes are represented in the design using specific colors, patterns, and structures to define the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade neighborhoods in the school.
The school’s design has created a learning environment that the Highland Middle School students love to be in.
Highland Middle School was recognized earlier this year by CEFPI, the Council of Educational Facility Planners International as a “Project of Distinction.”
