Get to know Kayla:
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy hiking and hanging out in nature during the warmer times of the year. My husband Eric and I have started a tradition of going to the New England states at least once a year to see friends and find new adventures there.
What are your most impactful projects at DRAW?
Pittsburgh Public Schools Salon Perry at Perry High School: This project was the first opportunity I was given to work on a project from start to finish. I worked with the consultants while developing drawings, with the city to approve the drawings, and co-ran the CA meetings through construction. The students and staff still rave about the project regularly.
Slippery Rock Area High School Renovations and Additions: For this project, I worked with a whole team of co-workers that I had never worked with before. Most of my co-workers were new to the firm, so we were all learning how each other worked while completing this project. It was also very concept heavy, so we explored new finishes and uses of finishes to pull the concept through on all the surfaces in and out of the building.
New Bethel Park Elementary School: This project consolidated a total of 5 elementary schools into one. This led to design of a new elementary school housing over 1,800 students. This size is common in Europe but not in the United States, so the team had to consider many spatial adjacencies and new ways of thinking for bus routes and pick-up/ drop-offs. This project was also the biggest project I have worked on to date at almost 300,000 square feet.
What keeps you coming back to work everyday?
The connections I have with my co-workers and the desire to see the jobs I am working on, built and in use.
What is your favorite architectural building?
I don’t have a favorite, but I love the Gothic style.
What is your dream destination?
Right now, my dream destination is Arizona to explore the landscape.
What is your bucket list item?
My bucket list item would be to take a train trip through Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
